A Study on the Cultivative Characteristics of Leading Fifteen Chestnut Cultivars (Castanea Millers)

Abstract
Leading fifteen cultivars of chestnut trees, seventy five to eighty in each cultivar were planted in April 1973, and most of them were top grafted again following year for winter severe cold damage.
Each ten trees sampled from each cultivars were investigated from May to November 1976, and the experiment field was located northside of moutain in the vicinity middle part of Korea.
The imported chestnut cultivars were Kanne, Akju, Kinley, Moriwase, Rihey, Kingyose, Chukupa, Ibki, Dansawa and Yamatowase, and other selected cultivars were Sunsung, Sangrim, Okguwang, Sandae and Dahup.
It was found that the most prevailing variety, Chukupa, when used as control, was inferior to other cultivars except Rihey, Sangrim, Dansawa and Kingyose. And the recommendable three cultivars were Moriwase, Kanne and Yamatowase in respect to growth habits, yields, total sugar content and to ecological aspects for maturity.
